South Campground is Zion National Park's other in-park campground in Southern Utah, a short walk from Watchman but run on a completely different system: first-come, first-served, no reservations, no exceptions. That makes it either a thrilling backup plan or a frustrating gamble. It suits smaller rigs and flexible travelers who can arrive early and would rather try their luck than plan six months out.
The practical picture is dry camping only across 117 sites, most accommodating rigs up to 24 feet and even those are tight, at $30 a night. The season runs March through October, closed in winter, and cell signal is similar to Watchman. In peak season it fills by mid-morning and sometimes earlier on weekends, so our guide's rule is simple: under 24 feet and at the gate by 8 AM gives you reasonable odds. Larger rigs should look elsewhere; maneuvering room is minimal. The trade-off is uncertainty in exchange for a spot inside Zion when Watchman is booked solid.
